*NEW* Common Mullein

Regular price $3.50 USD

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is my favourite wasteland plant. I say wasteland, because they have the rugged tenacity to set down roots just about anywhere that is dry and infertile. And yet, they thrive.

The plant takes on two distinct growth stages. In the first year, it grows as a low-to-the-ground rosette of large, velvety soft grey leaves. it then takes off in its second year, growing a tall, almost imposing tower of bright, lemony yellow flowers. It's especially fascinating to watch as the blooms open and mature, starting from the bottom and moving up the spike.

Add the flowers to salads!

This is also a medicinal plant. Leaves are harvested in the first year, and flowers, as they open, in the second.

Special Notes: Biennial self-seeder.  Prefers full sun and well-draining soil. Gorgeous, soft, wooly, grey leaves and tall towers of yellow flowers.  Drought tolerant. Hardy zone 4-9.

Approximately 100+ seeds per packet.

Seed Starting and Growing: Direct sow on soil surface in spring. This is a rampant self-seeder so be sure to cut the flower stalk.

About You Grow Girl Seeds:

All of the seeds that I sell were lovingly homegrown and harvested by me, small scale, in my urban garden using organic methods only -- no chemicals or pesticides whatsoever. Tomato varieties are isolated to stay true using the flower bagging method and I test for germination quality. I take special care in choosing varieties that I find unusual, interesting and fabulous, and/or especially suitable for growing in small space gardens.
