Epazote - Unusual Culinary Herb

Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides) is an incredibly aromatic herb native to Mexico and South America. It is most commonly known for it's use in black bean dishes to prevent flatulence, but often appears in with eggs, tamales, and quesadillas, where it's potent, gasoline scent is transformed into a full, deep, and rich flavour profile. There is nothing else like it!

Note: Epazote is also a potent anti-parasitic herb, and while it is considered safe for culinary use in reasonable quantities, caution should be taken with pregnant women and small children.


Special Notes: Prefers full sun and good, well-draining soil, but will freely self-seed in even the poorest soils. Can be grown in a pot. Tender perennial, hardy to zones 8+. Grown as a self-seeding annual everywhere else.

Approximately 250+ seeds per packet. Grown and harvested in the 2018 gardening season.

Seed Starting and Growing: Sow indoors 2-4 weeks before last frost and transplant outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press seeds into the soil lightly. Requires warmth to germinate. Easy to direct sow outdoors once the soil warms up after last frost.

Tomato varieties are isolated to stay true using the flower bagging method and I test for germination quality. I take special care in choosing varieties that I find unusual, interesting and fabulous, and/or especially suitable for growing in small space gardens.
